The Affordability Crisis...
By The Numbers
The Affordable Housing Crisis is Growing. Rising costs and limited supply are putting stable and safe homes out of reach for millions of individuals and families.
The U.S. average monthly rent climbed to $2,045 in early 2025, marking an all-time high and outpacing wage growth in most regions.
Half of all renters, ~22.6 million households are cost-burdened, paying more than 30% of their income on rent, with 27% spending over half.
There is a shortfall of 7.1 million rental homes available to extremely low-income renters, leaving just 35 affordable homes per 100 households.

Affordable housing refers to homes that are priced so individuals and families can pay for them without sacrificing other basic needs. Typically, housing is considered affordable when it costs no more than 30% of a household’s income. Affordable housing can include rental apartments, homes for purchase, and supportive housing options, all designed to ensure people of all income levels have a safe, stable place to live.
You can apply for affordable housing by contacting your local housing authority, which can provide information about available programs, eligibility requirements, and waitlists in your area. It’s helpful to gather documents that verify your income, household size, and identification before starting an application. You can also explore affordable housing listings on websites like Zillow.com and Apartments.com by using their search filters to find units that meet your needs.
